The minimum penalty for sin is death. Even this, is not the real problem.
The real problem is not that the punishment for sin is death, or that sin causes death.
The real problem is that death causes sin.
Death causes Sin
Death is not only the consequence of sin, death is also the reason for sin.
The sons of Adam are all born dead and thus sin is their natural behavior.
God sent Christ to save us from sin, not form the consequences of sin.
Hell is called the Second Death, and that is the judgement for rejecting Christ.
