What is a Covenant?

A covenant is a formal, binding agreement or relationship between two or more parties, often characterized by promises, obligations, and commitments. In its broadest sense, it establishes a framework for mutual responsibilities or benefits, typically initiated by a party with greater authority. The term originates from the Latin *convenire* (“to come together”) and carries significant weight in legal, cultural, and especially religious contexts, such as the Bible.

Ancient Near East Covenants

In the ancient Near Eastern world and biblical tradition—where the concept is deeply rooted—a covenant was more than a casual deal; it was a solemn pact, often sealed with rituals, signs, or oaths, carrying profound consequences for fulfillment or breach.

Senior Party Imposes the Covenant on the Junior

Unlike modern contracts, which are typically negotiated between equals, ancient covenants were often imposed by a senior party (e.g., a king or God) on a junior party (e.g., a vassal or people), with little to no room for negotiation.

Key Characteristics of a Covenant

Based on the aspects we’ve discussed, here’s what defines a covenant:

  1. Parties Involved: At least two parties—a senior party (the initiator, often with superior power) and a junior party (the recipient or subordinate). Example: God and humanity in biblical covenants.
  2. Terms: Specific conditions or promises outlining what each party is expected to do or receive. These can be conditional (requiring action) or unconditional (a gift or pledge).
  3. Sign: A visible or symbolic marker (e.g., a rainbow, circumcision, or a ritual) that signifies the covenant and serves as a reminder of its terms.
  4. Duration: The time frame—temporary, generational, or eternal—depending on the covenant’s purpose.
  5. The Promise/Blessing: The positive outcome or benefit offered, such as protection, prosperity, or relationship.
  6. The Associated Curse – The penalty for failing to uphold the terms, especially in conditional covenants.

Types of Covenants (in Biblical Context)

Suzerain-Vassal Covenant:

  • A conditional agreement where the senior party (e.g., God) sets laws or demands, and the junior party (e.g., Israel) must obey to receive blessings (e.g., Mosaic Covenant).

Royal Grant Covenant:

  • An unconditional promise from the senior party to the junior party, emphasizing the grantor’s faithfulness (e.g., Noahic, Abrahamic or Davidic Covenants).

Mutual Covenant:

  • Rare in biblical contexts but seen in human agreements (e.g., marriage), where both parties pledge mutual fidelity.

Covenants in the Bible

In Scripture, a covenant is God’s way of establishing or restoring a relationship with humanity. It reflects His initiative and authority as the senior party:

  • God offers terms (e.g., obedience in the Mosaic Covenant, faith in the New Covenant).
  • Humanity, as the junior party, responds—either by acceptance (obedience/faith) or rejection (disobedience).
  • Examples include the covenants with Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, David, and Jesus, each advancing God’s redemptive plan.

Broader Meaning

Beyond religion, “covenant” can refer to any serious commitment:

  • Legal: A clause in a deed or agreement (e.g., property covenants).
  • Social: Marriage is often called a covenant due to its binding nature.
  • Theological: A covenant signifies trust, loyalty, and a shared destiny, often sealed with a sign like blood or a meal.

In essence, a covenant is a relational bond with structure—more personal than a contract, more enduring than a promise, and rooted in the will of the one who offers it.

Six Main Biblical Covenants

Below is an outline of the six main covenants in the Bible, addressing the specified aspects for each: Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, David, and Jesus (often referred to as the New Covenant). These covenants reflect theological interpretations commonly held in Christian doctrine.

1.    The Adamic Covenant

27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28 Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

29 And God said, “See, I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be for food. 30 Also, to every beast of the earth, to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, in which there is life, I have given every green herb for food”; and it was so.

” (Genesis 1:27–30, NKJV)

  • Parties to the Covenant: God and Adam (representing humanity).
  • Terms of the Covenant: Adam was to obey God, tend the Garden of Eden, and refrain from eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (Genesis 2:15-17).
  • Sign of the Covenant: The tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil served as symbolic markers of the covenant’s terms.
  • Duration of the Covenant: Intended to be everlasting, contingent on obedience, but broken by Adam’s disobedience.
  • Promise of the Covenant: Life, dominion over creation, and unbroken fellowship with God if obedient (Genesis 1:28-30). (Sex, Power and Wealth)
  • Curse for Breaking the Covenant: Death (spiritual and physical), expulsion from Eden, and a cursed creation (Genesis 3:16-19). (Sex, Power and Wealth cursed)

2. The Noahic Covenant

Then God spoke to Noah and to his sons with him, saying: “And as for Me, behold, I establish My covenant with you and with your descendants after you, 10 and with every living creature that is with you: the birds, the cattle, and every beast of the earth with you, of all that go out of the ark, every beast of the earth. 11 Thus I establish My covenant with you: Never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood; never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.”

12 And God said: “This is the sign of the covenant which I make between Me and you, and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: 13 I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth. 14 It shall be, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the rainbow shall be seen in the cloud; 15 and I will remember My covenant which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. 16 The rainbow shall be in the cloud, and I will look on it to remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.” 17 And God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant which I have established between Me and all flesh that is on the earth.”

” (Genesis 9:8–17, NKJV)

  • Parties to the Covenant: God, Noah, his descendants, and every living creature (Genesis 9:8-17).
  • Terms of the Covenant: Humanity was to replenish the earth; God promised never again to destroy the earth with a flood.
  • Sign of the Covenant: The rainbow (Genesis 9:13-17).
  • Duration of the Covenant: As long as the earth endures (Genesis 9:16). This applies today to all the earth.
  • Promise of the Covenant: Preservation of the earth and its creatures from a global flood, ensuring stability for human life.
  • Curse for Breaking the Covenant: Royal Grant Covenant thus no explicit curse, as this covenant is unilateral (God’s promise alone); however, general consequences of sin persist.

3. The Abrahamic Covenant

Promises to Abram

12 Now the Lord had said to Abram:

“Get out of your country,
From your family
And from your father’s house,
To a land that I will show you.
2I will make you a great nation;
I will bless you
And make your name great;
And you shall be a blessing.
3I will bless those who bless you,
And I will curse him who curses you;

And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

So Abram departed as the Lord had spoken to him, and Lot went with him. And Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. Then Abram took Sarai his wife and Lot his brother’s son, and all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people whom they had acquired in Haran, and they departed to go to the land of Canaan. So they came to the land of Canaan. Abram passed through the land to the place of Shechem, as far as the terebinth tree of Moreh. And the Canaanites were then in the land.

Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said, “To your descendants I will give this land.” And there he built an altar to the Lord, who had appeared to him. And he moved from there to the mountain east of Bethel, and he pitched his tent with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; there he built an altar to the Lord and called on the name of the Lord. So Abram journeyed, going on still toward the South.

” (Genesis 12:1–9, NKJV)

5 Therefore He who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you, does He do it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? 6 just as Abraham “believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” 7 Therefore know that only those who are of faith are sons of Abraham. 8 And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel to Abraham beforehand, saying, “In you all the nations shall be blessed.” 9 So then those who are of faith are blessed with believing Abraham.

” (Galatians 3:5–9, NKJV)

  • Parties to the Covenant: God and Abraham, extending to his descendants (Genesis 12:1-3, 15:18, 17:1-14).
  • Terms of the Covenant: Faith. Abraham is the Father of Faith and Salvation by Faith Started with him. Gal 3:5 Abraham was to leave his land, follow God, and circumcise all males as a sign of loyalty; God promised to make him a great nation.
  • Sign of the Covenant: Circumcision (Genesis 17:10-14).
  • Duration of the Covenant: Everlasting (Genesis 17:7, 13, 19).
  • Promise of the Covenant: Land (Canaan), numerous descendants, and a blessing to all nations through his offspring (ultimately fulfilled in Christ).
  • Curse for Breaking the Covenant: Exclusion from the covenant community (e.g., uncircumcised males were cut off, Genesis 17:14); later, exile for disobedience.

4. The Mosaic Covenant (Sinaitic Covenant)

And Moses went up to God, and the Lord called to him from the mountain, saying, “Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel: ‘You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to Myself. Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people; for all the earth is Mine. And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words which you shall speak to the children of Israel.” So Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and laid before them all these words which the Lord commanded him. Then all the people answered together and said, “All that the Lord has spoken we will do.” So Moses brought back the words of the people to the Lord. And the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I come to you in the thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with you, and believe you forever.” So Moses told the words of the people to the Lord.

” (Exodus 19:3–9, NKJV)

The Covenant Renewed

10 And He said: “Behold, I make a covenant. Before all your people I will do marvels such as have not been done in all the earth, nor in any nation; and all the people among whom you are shall see the work of the LORD. For it is an awesome thing that I will do with you. 11 Observe what I command you this day. Behold, I am driving out from before you the Amorite and the Canaanite and the Hittite and the Perizzite and the Hivite and the Jebusite. 12 Take heed to yourself, lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land where you are going, lest it be a snare in your midst. 13 But you shall destroy their altars, break their sacred pillars, and cut down their wooden images 14 (for you shall worship no other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God), 15 lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they play the harlot with their gods and make sacrifice to their gods, and one of them invites you and you eat of his sacrifice, 16 and you take of his daughters for your sons, and his daughters play the harlot with their gods and make your sons play the harlot with their gods.
” (Exodus 34:10–16, NKJV)

  • Parties to the Covenant: God and the nation of Israel through Moses (Exodus 19:5-6, 24:7-8).
  • Terms of the Covenant: Israel was to obey the Law (Ten Commandments and other statutes) given at Sinai and worship God alone.
  • Sign of the Covenant: The Sabbath (Exodus 31:12-17).
  • Duration of the Covenant: Conditional and temporary in its administration, fulfilled and superseded by the New Covenant (Hebrews 8:13).
  • Promise of the Covenant: Blessings, prosperity, and a unique relationship with God as His treasured possession if obedient (Deuteronomy 28:1-14).
  • Curse for Breaking the Covenant: Curses including disease, famine, defeat, and exile (Deuteronomy 28:15-68).

5. The Davidic Covenant

Now therefore, thus shall you say to My servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts: “I took you from the sheepfold, from following the sheep, to be ruler over My people, over Israel. And I have been with you wherever you have gone, and have cut off all your enemies from before you, and have made you a great name, like the name of the great men who are on the earth. 10 Moreover I will appoint a place for My people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own and move no more; nor shall the sons of wickedness oppress them anymore, as previously, 11 since the time that I commanded judges to be over My people Israel, and have caused you to rest from all your enemies. Also the Lord tells you that He will make you a house.

12 “When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 14 I will be his Father, and he shall be My son. If he commits iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men and with the blows of the sons of men. 15 But My mercy shall not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I removed from before you. 16 And your house and your kingdom shall be established forever before you. Your throne shall be established forever.” ’ ”

” (2 Samuel 7:8–16, NKJV)

  • Parties to the Covenant: God and King David, extending to his lineage (2 Samuel 7:8-16).
  • Terms of the Covenant: David and his seed were to rule faithfully; God promised an everlasting dynasty.
  • Sign of the Covenant: The throne of David (symbolized by his reigning house).
  • Duration of the Covenant: Everlasting (2 Samuel 7:16).
  • Promise of the Covenant: An eternal kingdom and throne through David’s line, ultimately fulfilled in Jesus, the Messianic King.
  • Curse for Breaking the Covenant: Discipline for individual kings (e.g., loss of peace or temporary loss of rule), but the covenant itself remains intact (2 Samuel 7:14-15).

6.The New Covenant (Covenant of Jesus)

A New Covenant

31 “Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah—32 not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says the Lord. 33 But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 34 No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”

35    Thus says the Lord,
Who gives the sun for a light by day,
The ordinances of the moon and the stars for a light by night,
Who disturbs the sea,
And its waves roar
(The Lord of hosts is His name):
36    “If those ordinances depart
From before Me, says the Lord,
Then the seed of Israel shall also cease
From being a nation before Me forever.”
37 Thus says the Lord:
“If heaven above can be measured,
And the foundations of the earth searched out beneath,
I will also cast off all the seed of Israel
For all that they have done, says the Lord.

38 “Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, that the city shall be built for the Lord—from the Tower of Hananel to the Corner Gate. 39 The surveyor’s line shall again extend straight forward over the hill Gareb; then it shall turn toward Goath. 40 And the whole valley of the dead bodies and of the ashes, and all the fields as far as the Brook Kidron, to the corner of the Horse Gate toward the east, shall be holy to the Lord. It shall not be plucked up or thrown down anymore forever.”

” (Jeremiah 31:31–40, NKJV)

The Lord’s Supper is Instituted

26 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.” 27 Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. 28 For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. 29 But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom.”

” (Matthew 26:26–29, NKJV)

  • Parties to the Covenant: God and all who believe in Jesus Christ (Jeremiah 31:31-34; Luke 22:20; Hebrews 8:6-13).

  • Promise of the Covenant: Salvation from sin, a new heart with God’s law written on it, and eternal life through union with Christ (Jeremiah 31:33-34; John 3:16).
  • Curse for Breaking the Covenant: Being cut off from Christ which is Hell. This is not instant but it is constantly warned (Hebrews 4 and 10) etc more than 80 warnings throughout the New Testament.

Summary

These covenants trace God’s unfolding plan of redemption, starting with Adam (humanity’s fall), progressing through Noah (preservation), Abraham (promise), Moses (law), and David (kingship), and culminating in Jesus (fulfillment and eternal salvation). Each builds on the previous, revealing God’s grace and justice. Let me know if you’d like further elaboration on any of these!
