Because Jesus is offering death right now. See Rom 6:3-7
The opportunity of a lifetime must be taken in the lifetime of the opportunity.
Those who reject the offer of death now will cry for it later but death will not be available anymore because death and Hades are themselves cast into Gehenna.
See, believe, and embrace the cross as your death. That is the only way to escape the second death.

Or Eternal Death
The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works.14. Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.15. And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.
